The General Pros and Cons of Laser Surgery
Pros
1. It is known as the "bloodless surgery" for it's relative lacking in blood. Due to this lack of blood the surgical site is much clearer and drier than that of a regular surgery. 2. Lasers are more precise and exact than scalpels (knives used in surgery to make incisions). 3. It may be a shorter operating time, therefore someone else can use the room in less time (more surgeries per day) and a lighter anesthesia or sedative can be used on the patient making it more cost efficient in that respect. 4. There is less need for an operating room because more procedures can be done in outpatient settings such as in a doctors office. 5. The heat from the laser kills germs on the surgical site so there is a lower risk of infection for the patient. 6.Smaller incisions can be used because light does not need as big an incision to travel through, making the procedure more cost efficient. 7. It makes some procedures simpler and reduces their risk. |
Cons
1. Fewer doctors are actually trained to do surgery while equiped with lasers so only a select amount of people can perform the surgery. 2.The equipment for laser surgery costs more and it is bulkier, so it is harder to move around and takes up more space on the surgical site. This problem is slowly being addressed by new technological advances. 3.There are stricter safety precautions concerning laser surgery so other equipment is necessary and preparation takes some more time. |
